WooCommerce / Shopify

An online store built on whichever platform actually fits your business.

We build online stores on WooCommerce and Shopify, and we'll tell you honestly which one makes more sense for what you're selling before we ever start designing.

Why We Build on Two Different Platforms

A lot of web design shops sell one e-commerce platform because it's the one they know how to build, and then they spend the whole sales call convincing you it's right for your business regardless of what your business actually needs. We don't work that way. Higher Foundations builds online stores on both WooCommerce and Shopify, and the platform we recommend depends on how you sell, what you already have, and what you want to be responsible for once the store is live.

Neither platform is better in the abstract. They're built for different situations, and picking the wrong one means either paying for flexibility you never use or fighting limitations you didn't need to accept. Before any design work starts, we talk through your actual catalog, your growth plans, and how hands-on you want to be with the technical side, and land on the platform that fits that conversation.

How the Two Actually Compare

WooCommerce runs on WordPress, so if you already have a WordPress site or were planning to build one anyway, adding a store extends what you already have instead of standing up a separate system next to it. There's no percentage taken off your sales beyond standard payment processing fees, you get full control over the product pages and checkout experience, and the WordPress plugin ecosystem covers almost anything you need for shipping, tax, and marketing. The tradeoff is that you, or we, are responsible for keeping the site maintained, since WooCommerce is software you host and manage rather than a service someone else runs for you.

Shopify takes the opposite tradeoff. It's a hosted platform, which means checkout, PCI compliance, inventory, and server maintenance are all handled for you behind the scenes, and a store can be live and taking orders faster than almost any other route. That convenience comes with a monthly platform fee and, depending on the plan and the apps you add, sometimes additional transaction costs. For a business that wants to focus on running the store rather than maintaining the software underneath it, that tradeoff is usually a good one.

In practice, the decision usually comes down to one question: do you want more control and no platform fee, or less to manage and a faster launch. Both are legitimate answers, and we have real experience building on both, so we're not steering you toward the one that's easier for us.

Explore Each Platform in Detail

If you want to see how each platform plays out in more depth, we have a full page on each. Our WooCommerce website design page covers what it means to build a store on the same WordPress foundation as the rest of your site, and our Shopify store design page covers what it looks like to launch new on Shopify when it's genuinely the right call. If you already have a Shopify store that isn't working for you anymore, that's a different conversation entirely, and our Shopify redesign and migration page addresses that instead.

When Neither Platform Is Enough

Every so often a business needs something a standard e-commerce platform was not built to do: a checkout flow tied to a custom booking system, unusual inventory rules, or a buying process that doesn't look like a normal storefront at all. For those situations, our custom-coded website design work is the better fit. It's not where most e-commerce projects land, and we'll always try WooCommerce or Shopify first, but when a business genuinely needs it, we've built that kind of system before.

Built From Pittsburgh, Working With Stores Across the Country

Higher Foundations is based in Beaver County, PA, just outside Pittsburgh, and we build e-commerce sites for local businesses regularly. The process doesn't depend on being in the same room, though, so we take on online store projects for businesses well beyond the area too. You can browse real projects we have launched to see the range of work, or reach out directly to talk through what you're trying to sell online.
